In a Goldfish's Wake

Now that we've just "mourned" the loss of yet another one of Rocco's goldfish (I lost count after the 12th one), I was reminded of how we held a kind of kid-friendly version of a "wake" -- with plenty of comfort food -- when the first fish died.

After the requisite "burial at sea," which I seriously thought was reserved for sitcom plot points until it happened at our home, we told Rocco we'd have a supper to celebrate Mackie. (He's since been through a cavalcade of other fish with names including Flighty, Shark, each of the cast of characters in "Finding Nemo," the Japanese word for "nine" [I'm still trying to figure out that one…]

So, Rocco planned the wake's menu, which included my healthy version of Southern Macaroni and Cheese, homemade chicken nuggets, and tomato soup with, of course, Goldfish crackers. We topped it off with hot fudge sundaes. Rocco said that Mackie was a good fish and that he would be happy that we had had supper for him. And he would have been full.

By the way, on that lots-of-fish-have-been-lost-at-our-home thing: the fish really are well-cared for; honest. They're not over or under-fed; the aquarium water's been tested ad nauseum; the tank's sparkling clean… I just think it might be the universe's way of letting Rocco get more and more imaginative with names. Oh, and for us -- as a family -- to come up with more wake-fest ideas.
