Close-Up on Cake

This morning I did a segment for the "KTLA Morning Show" in Los Angeles to promote "Cake Decorating for Dummies." I taught the anchors a few tips about how to decorate a cake using colored frosting and candies, and had them each try out their skills on a blank canvas of cake.

I'm thrilled because it was such a lively, freewheeling session in which we got to talk about the importance of a crumb coat, smooth vs. textured frosting, the different candies you can use for multi-purpose decorations, and how important cake-worthy celebrations are to family. All that while the anchors dove in with happy abandon to play with the myriad decorations I had laid out for them to use.

All the anchors -- two women, the delightful Michaela Pereira and Jessica Holmes, and one man, good-humored Carlos Amezcua --  seemed equally into putting their zeal and creativity out there.

Of course, I was also happy that my cakes looked good on camera and didn't crumble under the lights, that the frostings didn't melt, and that -- above all -- we had fun!
