When did my kids make Valentines? Two days before the holiday. How about doing their Christmas shopping? The weekend before, of course. When they get invited to a birthday party, thank goodness for gift bags! You can wrap the gift in the car on the way to the party, right after you left the store where you bought it!

My kids get new clothing when I notice for a few weeks that I've seen more ankle and wrist than I'm used to; or in the summer, a little more belly than I'd like.

Yes indeed, I am last-minute mom. I wouldn't know how to get things done well in advance if you paid me. (Which, actually, applies to my job...I never miss a deadline, but I wouldn't say I come in early, either.)

There's just so much to remember! Little league signups? Um, practically every year I'm calling, begging coaches to add my kid to the team. They invented the pro-rated fees for classes because of people like me.

I often feel like a "good" mother would have had the Valentines done a few weeks in advance. (After all, if she went shopping any time from January 4 on, she would have seen all the Valentine's stuff in the stores...and by the time a few days before Valentines Day rolls around, the stores are full of Easter items.

But at the same time, I have to do the best I can. I give myself credit - and a lot of it! - for getting it all done. The constant juggling act with my roles of wife, mother, employee, athlete, and friend is difficult. I'm constantly prioritizing and re-prioritizing my activities; cutting some here and spending less time there to ensure that enough of everything gets done.

I guess I wouldn't have it any other way.

And hey, it's so true: better late than never!
