Dancing with the 'kids'

I found this helpful Thank You! Your vote will be tallied soon!

Yeah, that's us. Should I be embarrassed?

I'm not referring to my children. They were away for the weekend with their grandparents.

No, this weekend, my 33-year-old husband took his 32-year-old wife out dancing - like we did all the time before we had children!

In eight years, all the bars and clubs we used to go to are pretty much gone, and so are the friends with whom we used to party. And it takes some work for me to find "going-out" clothes - I have casual stuff for work and a ton of exercise clothes, but cute clubbing clothes? Not so much.

Plus, we go to bed at 10 p.m. on weeknights, maybe 11 or midnight on the weekends. The clubs don't even get going until midnight around here!

So why did we decide to join the frat boys and college girls and have a night out on the town?

Because it was FUN. Seriously.

I guess I've felt like I grew up and all that going out stuff is in my past. But I still love music - and lately, with my new Zune music player and the satellite radio in my new car, I'm listening to more dance music and I've been remembering how enjoyable letting go on a dance floor really is.

Plus, some incredibly cool things have happened in the last eight years. Like, Washington state doesn't allow smoking in bars! My clothing doesn't stink when I leave!

And...Red Bull was invented! So, I have to say, Red Bull is a great way to stay awake past midnight (and of course, sugar-free Red Bull for those of us who count calories). It really doesn't taste good, but it is really effective.

So my husband and I are standing in line outside a popular club, and a 23-year-old boy tries to guess my age. He looks at my husband, looks at me, and says, "26?"

I asked him to marry me on the spot. My husband proudly told him, "Would you have any idea this woman has given birth twice?" and sent me and everyone else in line into hysterics.

Then, inside the club, I learned another cool thing. When you're not 23 years old and trying to impress someone, you're so much less self-conscious! It was so easy to walk out on the dance floor - sober - and just feel the music.

And it was so cool to hang with my hubby the way we did when we were younger. It reminded me of the beginning of our relationship.

So what if the club was full of 20-somethings? I felt like I had the best of both worlds: a night out on the town plus a stable family to go home to.

I think we're going to have to do that again, sometime soon!
