All the rage in bowling attire: pink dresses

Today is The Girl's birthday, and we did a family party this evening. When I first asked her what she wanted to do, I expected to hear something like "Go to the Rainforest Cafe" or "Everyone comes over and we play games." Instead, she said, "I want to dress up like a princess and go bowling."

Separately, I understood both parts. But together? Only from the mind of a four-year-old.

And how beautiful is that, seriously? Why shouldn't we dress up like princesses and bowl?

So we did. Grandma, The Girl, two close female family friends and I donned tiaras and pink dresses and hit the bowling alley.

Sure, my fuschia cocktail dress with bowling shoes drew some attention. But so what? My friend Danielle's floor-length pink prom dress did too - and it sure gave people something to talk about besides her gutter balls!

Seriously, there is nothing cuter in the world than a tiny four-year-old in a pink polka dotted dress, carrying a six-pound bowling ball in both arms, then dropping it and watching it roll towards the pins, hands on her hips as she waits to count how many she knocked down. And then the sheer delight on her face when she got a few - she would jump up and down and cheered for herself. How adorable!

I just love that The Girl doesn't yet have the notion that a princess dress is inappropriate for sports or whatever else she wants to do. She can be a girl and display her femininity, but she can bowl like her big brother and can run and play and even get really dirty - in a pink dress.

I hope she never loses that. Of course, with me as a mom, and my love for skirt-based workout clothes, hopefully she never will.

And if she ever asks me to bowl in a dress again, I'm totally down with that.
