Playing hard and staying strong

So, I thought I'd been through it all. I've done a LOT of hard workouts - you don't lose 60 pounds without hitting the gym a lot - not to mention complete a 200-mile bike ride in a day, run a marathon, complete an Ironman. I've been tired and I've been sore and I thought I knew muscle pain.

Well, that was before I met Crossfit.

Apparently Crossfit is this new trend in exercise classes; a co-worker of mine set up a… Read More

In the summer, when I carry a smaller purse, I don't have room to carry my camera.

So as any reader of this blog could see, I end up taking a lot of pictures with my cell phone camera - which frankly stinks. Most cell phone cameras are just checkboxes on a product features list, and the camera in my Motorola Q is no different.

But lately I've been really wanting to carry a camera everywhere I go. Out dancing with the… Read More

It started at a much younger age than I ever thought possible.

My baby, my darling four-year-old I affectionately call The Girl, came home from preschool last week with this pronouncement: "I want to be Juliet."

I didn't think much of it at first. I figured Juliet got a toy she wanted, or maybe Juliet got to go home from daycare earlier than my baby. So I said, "And why do you want to be Juliet?"

"Because she is so beautiful," The Girl… Read More

My kid in the kitchen

Posted October 05, 2007

When The Boy was born, I was all about the books. He would make the slightest noise, and I'd try to look up in every parenting book I had what it could possibly mean.

Eventually I learned to trust my own intuition and put the manuals away. I think they only served to freak me out, anyway.

So for the past five years or so, I haven't thought about what is age-appropriate for a seven-year-old. I think about what is appropriate for… Read More

I love candy so much. It ranks right up there with French fries.

So obviously as a Fit Mama, it's got to stay out of my life as much as possible. I really don't want to have it in my house.

So I'm trying to figure out what food or little toys I could substitute for candy and not disappoint the neighborhood.

I asked the experts: The Boy and The Girl.

The Girl was completely impractical. "A princess dancing set!" she said. "You… Read More

Halloween, or 'Harvest Party'?

Posted September 26, 2007

I have to admit, around some of my friends, I get a little embarrassed at this time of year.

"Are you willing to volunteer at the church's Harvest Party on Oct. 31?," they ask me.

And the answer: "Uh, no. My kids are allowed to Trick-or-Treat."

Sometimes I'm met with a non-judgmental, "Oh, okay" - but other times there's just stunned silence.

Are my kids condemned because I allow them to gather candy in the neighborhood?

Now, I am going to admit up front… Read More
