Fairy gear is popular in the Pacific Northwest.

Continuing our region-by-region look at hot costumes for Halloween 2008, we contacted Pacific Northwest Costume in Redmond, Washington, to find out what costumes are coolest up at the tippy-top of the continental United States.

We spoke to the spectacular Sherrill Taylor, Pacific Northwest Costume's owner, about what's leaving her shelves at a rapid pace this witching season.

Boy Stuff:

  • Like her Midwestern counterpart, Taylor has been getting lots of requests for Batman and Joker costumes inspired by The Dark Knight.
  • The new movie and Cartoon Network series, Star Wars: The Clone Wars, has inspired some new designs based on the 'toon, and kids are way into just about any get-up from the show. To further illustrate the franchise's longevity, Taylor also gets a lot of requests for old school Boba Fett gear and Storm Trooper armor.
  • Pirates of the Caribbean's Jack Sparrow still holds some sway with young mateys. It's died down a little this year, but with a new POTC movie on its way, no doubt the Sparrow costume ship will sail again. (Don't miss these pirate face-painting tips.)
  • Harry Potter still is magical for boys. It makes sense to us that Hogwarts be well-represented on Halloween.
  • As for more classical stuff, aviator gear is big with boys, especially flight suits with a Top Gun twist.
  • Civil War soldier outfits do well, and Taylor also cited a few kids who opt to go presidential in full-on Abe Lincoln gear. (We think that a top hat is wearable all year.)

Girl Stuff:
  • Disney princesses, in particular the Little Mermaid and Sleeping Beauty, are among the top-selling girl costumes. Cinderella attracts some young royalty, but every little girl "wants to be a mermaid" or to have Aurora's long blonde locks. Jasmine doesn't sell as well, thanks to a midriff-baring ensemble that doesn't suit the climate.
  • Hannah Montana is expected to see many lookalikes in Washington this year.
  • Though small in stature, fairies are huge this year. Taylor gets requests for Tinkerbell, and also sees young sprites clamoring to create their own fairy outfit. Taylor stocks nearly 60 styles of wings, which she says little girls pair with a favorite party dress. To add a magical touch, Taylor recommends fairy-ifying dresses with some spray-on hair glitter that washes out. For fairy makeup tips, check out our face-painting feature. (Another fairy note: Taylor also stocks "scary fairy" gear for girls who want to a sprite-like look with an added fear factor. "It's kind of gothic, and you add some fangs. It's pretty cool," she said.)
  • As for classics, Wizard of Oz's Dorothy is a mainstay, as are witch costumes. "With the right stuff, you can always be a great witch."

Toddler/Baby Stuff:
  • Superhero costumes, in particular the Flash, Superman, and Batman, are big with little boys.
  • A baby-sized Yoda outfit is doing very well. "It's hysterically funny for a baby," Taylor said.
  • For the wee girls, fairy outfits come in toddler sizes and are very popular.
