Wiggies, a line of toddler-sized wigs, are expected to be popular at Chicago Costume.

"What are you gonna be for Halloween?"

While we grown-ups talk about the presidential election, or the debates, the kids in our lives are thinking of much more crucial business: their Halloween costumes.

So we're taking some time to poll costume shops in different parts of the country to see what disguises are most popular in those regions.

First stop, the Midwest. Courtland Hickey, owner of Chicago Costume, filled us in on what's popular at his shop.

Boy Stuff:

  • The recent movie The Dark Knight -- filmed almost entirely in Chicago -- has made the Joker and Batman a top request for children (and adults).
  • Boys ages "6 to 99" love Star Wars costumes, particularly Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader. An employee at the store told me that boys are looking for "anything with a sword."
  • Indiana Jones fedora hats, satchels and faux whips are selling quickly for boys of all ages.
Girl Stuff:
  • Girls can't resist the newest Hannah Montana looks, as well as High School Musical-inspired garb. Hickey said that microphones in particular are popular with girls 6 and up.
  • Star Wars is also big with girls, but they go for Princess Leia looks.
  • Garden fairies and princess costumes are also a hit with little girls.
For the Younger Set (Infants and Toddlers):
  • Buntings furry penguin and lion costumes are a hit.
  • Hickey also predicts that a new line called Wiggies, hilariously adorable wigs for toddlers, will do well this season. (Check out the toddler-sized Elvis wig at left.)
After spending some time on the store's website (www.chicagocostume.com), we fell in love with this Peeps costume for toddlers and this Elizabeth Swann costume for girls (which has the added bonus of choosing a sword to go with it ... so much the better for fending off all those Lukes and Darth Vaders!)

Thanks to Mr. Hickey and his employees for taking time out from their busiest season to speak with us.
