The Preschool Graduation Blues

Usually a very happy kid.

This weekend my 4-year-old daughter was a little weepy. She cried more easily than usual and was quickly frustrated with every day tasks.

She burst into tears at one point and said, "you're making me sad!"

I had committed the egregious sin of asking her not to stomp her foot while talking to me.

Then she collapsed in my arms and sobbed.

My razor sharp mom instinct finally kicked in and I asked her if perhaps she was sad about something else.

"My . . . friends . . . are . . . all going away to kindergarten," she heaved.

Ah, the graduation blues. The uncertainty of the future. When everyone wonders if they'll ever see each other again.

I had this feeling too WHEN I GRADUATED HIGH SCHOOL. Then college. Less so after grad school.

But the graduation blues in preschool?

And lest you think I am exaggerating, dear reader, there IS indeed going to be a GRADUATION CEREMONY at my daughter's preschool at the end of this month (cue the video cameras and parental tears).

What's next? Kindergarten graduation? 5th grade graduation?

I remember back at my 8th grade graduation thinking what a bogus event THAT was.

Am I a terrible, jaded, unsympathetic Mommy?

Perhaps it is because I am in the field of education and have chaperoned my fair share of Disneyland Grad Nights, that I am a little dismissive of preschool graduation.

And yet . . . .

Annie HAS been at her preschool almost three years. She does have good friends there. They ARE all going to different kindergartens next year.

Would it be over-the-top to host a graduation party at my house?
