Ever since my daughter was an infant, my husband and I have marveled at her lack of physical affection.

Well, let me explain.

Annie is not what you would describe as cuddlesome. As soon as she could sit up, she tried to scoot away from us. Once she was walking, she would wiggle free from our arms. She's just one of those people who does not like to be held.

Every once in awhile I wish she were a helpless baby, just so I could hold her in my arms again. These days when I ask her for a hug, when it is given - IF it is given - she does it grudgingly. Quickly.

At first we could not understand it. I mean, we consider ourselves affectionate people. We both like to be hugged. How could we have a kid who does not want hugs? But she just doesn't.

Unless of course she is sick. (My husband and I have each confessed at different points that we secretly enjoy how needy she becomes while running a fever, which is not very often.)

Or injured. Though her boo-boos are short-lived, she does like them to be kissed.

And then there is the occasional bad dream.

This morning she woke up early and ran into the kitchen where I was making coffee. "I had a baaaaad dream!" she sobbed and collapsed in my arms.

A look of delight crossed my face. I led her to the living room where we spent the next 30 minutes cuddling on the couch watching Elmo.

I'll take what I can get.
