So, my kindergarten chaos continues.
Perfect Husband and I are in the process of looking to buy a house. As first-time buyers, we are researching neighborhoods, commute times -- we must be closer to his work, which is a 90 minute drive home most nights -- and of course schools.
We looked in one lovely neighborhood -- treelined streets, old homes with character, etc., but everyone insisted that the public schools were not GOOD. If we bought in that 'hood, we must go private.
Okay, so you are telling me we are going to stretch our household budget to its outermost limit to buy this house and THEN we have to fork over tuition?
For kindergarten?
Which, by the way, costs anywhere from $6,000 to $15,000 a year.
For KINDERGARTEN!
Isn't that what property taxes are for? To pay for a free, public education?
Whatever happened to the neighborhood school, like the one I grew up attending? My brothers and I walked the 2 blocks to school with other kids from the hood, while the moms looked out their kitchen windows and kept tabs on us.
Is it because we live in a large, urban metropolis that we are seeing the death of the neighborhood school? Or is this happening other places, too? I wonder.
I long for that feeling of community. The whole neighborhood walking to school in the morning, attending the Halloween Carnival together, the Talent Show.
Does this still exist anywhere?
Did it ever?
