Pregnancy Horrors: Reflux

Ah....REFLUX. What a lovely sensation of burning chest pain - that special sensation that only acid in the esophagus can generate!

So special.

And so my new reality.

Somehow, I got away with not experiencing reflux (or GERD as its often affectionately called in medical circles, Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease) during my first pregnancy, but for the past week or so, I've really had an escalation of symptoms.

As in, I'M HAVING IT RIGHT NOW. AND NOW. AND NOW.

Sigh. Lord, don't you think I've suffered enough this pregnancy with my 80-year-old legs and *ahem* digestive issues?

I brought this up at my recent OB visit to which my provider told me to try taking TUMS. Doesn't she know that our bottle of TUMS is all the way downstairs? It might as well be in another state. How about  some prescription medications, woman?

Anyway, I suppose there are some lifestyle modifications that I can follow to make life livable.

  • Head of bed raised 6 inches. Already done. Not helping.
  • Decreasing fat intake. I'll try but I'm making no guarantees.
  • Stop smoking. Not a problem.
  • Decreasing alcohol intake. Unfortunately, not a problem.
  • Losing weight. HAHAHAHAHAHA. I wish.
  • Not reclining after eating for at least 3 hours. Dude. I'm getting reflux sitting up.
  • Not consuming large meals. As I'm physically unable to consume large meals due to a certain massive baby taking up most of my abdomen, not so much of a problem.
  • Avoiding trigger foods: peppermint, citrus juices, caffeine, alcohol, spicy food, chocolate, tomato products, fatty foods.

Note: I developed awful GERD today after eating a hot pretzel. Fat content: minimal. Alcohol content: none. Spicy content: none. CItrus/tomato/chocolate/peppermint content: none. So much for avoiding trigger foods.

(After telling my kind husband that I would be just having TUMS for dessert, he went downstairs and brought the bottle right to me! That's love!)

You know it's time to have the baby when your dessert is TUMS.
