Enough with the surprises

I found this helpful Thank You! Your vote will be tallied soon!

He? She? It?

Friends of ours just had a baby. They wanted to keep the sex of the child a surprise so we did the whole yellow and green song and dance (Insert cartoon of dancing yellow blanket sleepers and wriggly green socks skating across the floor).

I never got this.

I mean, don't get me wrong. I love good surprises.

But, when it came to my pregnancy, I figured I had surprises in store a plenty: Surprise over how little sleep I could have. Surprise over the pain of having your nipples vacuum-sucked ten times a day. Surprise over the sheer quantity of poop and gas a very petite butt could produce. (Amazing!)

I'd be good with surprises.

Not to mention the fact that I tend to run obsessive-compulsive when it comes to planning and control. (Cleaning, sadly, does not run together with this insanity bundle.)

I needed to know the sex of our baby. Stat!

So imagine my utter disappointment when the ultrasound tech made a frown, wriggled the probe a few more directions, and exclaimed, "Can't call it!"

In the months that followed, repeated ultrasounds could never give me a definitive answer. Probably girl, but not sure.

Of course, I began to fear the worst: AMBIGUOUS GENITALIA.

Is this why you don't know?

I was about to pass out thinking about gender reassignment surgery.

And when my little precious daughter was born, the first words out of my panting mouth were, "IS IT A GIRL? Are you SURE?"
