See ya Mommy!

On a recent picture-perfect weekend day, I announced to my husband, "Let's go for a bike ride!"  The weather was perfectly cool, blue skies overhead, and our bikes had been stowed away for the majority of summer, being way too hot to ride.

Since getting bikes a year ago, we had already enjoyed many a family ride - Jolie riding along in her bike seat attached to my husband's bike, providing a running commentary as we snaked along bike paths in the park, complete with sound effects ranging from pure joy (WHEEEEEE!) to pure intolerance (WAAAAAAAH!) when the novelty had worn off. I love going out together as a family. I'm in charge of carrying the backpack with our water bottle and snacks as JP has enough extra weight to lug (serious quads workout for him pulling our sumo-child).

Jolie has only grown to love our bike rides with time. A year ago, we were dealing with serious helmet deflection, probably for good reason as her kiddie helmet looked like it weighed down her head quite a bit, and I'm sure the weight got old after awhile. Now, she loves having her helmet and really can get into the whole outdoor biking experience.

So on this picture-perfect day, I was suddenly filled with a childlike joy again, thinking about setting out for another family ride. Bikes! Riding! Bonding!

And, then, I remembered. I'm pregnant. Not just a little pregnant anymore. Really. Pregnant.

Oof. I think that means I can't be getting on a bike.

For a minute there, I debated whether I really couldn't go on a leisurely bike ride. Really? Is it that much of a risk? A part of me said: It's such a low likelihood of falling, I should be fine! Another part of me snapped back: But your balance could be off with that massive belly of yours, why risk it?

Most practitioners recommend not engaging in activities that may put women at risk for injury if their balance is off during the second and third trimesters such as horseback riding, skiing, and surfing. And with centers of gravity shifting, I suppose bike riding would fall into that category. Better safe than sorry.

My husband, though, has taken Jolie on a couple of solo bike rides, usually when I'm not home. It sounds like she loves them - always requesting a bike ride whenever she sees the bikes, hanging out all lonely-like in the garage.

I'm only slightly bitter for having to miss out on all the fun. (Spring. Bike. Me. Be prepared.)
