Robert Downey, Jr. credits son Indio with helping him get his life back together after years of drug abuse.

Posted May 20, 2008 by Tommi Lewis Tilden with additional reporting by Audrey Turcot

It wasn't long ago that "Iron Man" Robert Downey Jr. was playing Russian roulette with drugs -- and it was a good bet that the long-respected actor wouldn't survive his addictions. Downey, Jr. said his son, Indio with first wife Deborah Falconer, helped save his life -- but barely. "Our marriage and having a child probably kept me off the rails, but it wasn't enough to right the ship," he told Parade.

If Indio helped save his life, Downey Jr.'s, been busy returning the favor. While promoting his mega-blockbuster on "Late Night," he told David Letterman that his 14 year-old is surprisingly well-adjusted given that most of his pals are Hollywood spawn and that he'll even have to (shock!) get a job this summer.

And now the 43-year-old actor, who's been on the clean and narrow for several years now, is ready to expand his family with new wife, producer Susan Levin. "I want more children. I also want to travel. I talk about things I want to do a lot." With the boffo box office take and rave reviews for "Iron Man," it looks like Downey, Jr. is primed and ready to do anything he wants.
