Saturated Pork Chops

So, brining. In a word: ew. I will happily pour vinegary pickling liquid over any size and shape of cucumber, and I love a stinkily fermenting crock of submerged saurkraut. But raw meat in liquid? It just gives me the heeby jeebies. It could be because of the time I was pregnant with Birdy, when I opened a friend's fridge to find a collection of chicken breasts in a plastic pitcher of liquid, like so many formaldehyde-preserved brains; given that… Read More

Chocolate Chip Cookies

Posted April 12, 2010

These cookies are from Kim Boyce's wildly inspiring cookbook Good to the Grain: Baking with Whole-Grain Flours, and they are made with, um, 100% whole-wheat flour. That's right. 100%.

And they are just insanely delicious. "Well they should be," my friend Peggy said, reading over my shoulder. "Look at all that butter and sugar and chocolate!" Exactly. But here's how I think about it: butter and sugar are like escorts. If what they're escorting into your body is white… Read More

Devilish Eggs

Posted April 05, 2010
Ben will happily eat a fried egg, a poached egg, or a scrambled egg--but a hard-boiled egg nearly forces him from the room in revulsion. We still like to reminisce about one time when he was a baby, sitting in his high chair at a friend's house. "Shouldn't we feed him one of these eggs?" she said, and we said, "Oh, don't. He hates hard-boiled eggs. And she said, "Really? What kind of baby doesn't like boiled eggs? Here, Ben."… Read More

Toffee Buttercrunch Matzoh

Posted March 29, 2010

It's time for another episode of Half-Jew Holidays! It feels like just five minutes ago I was all, "Here's my recipe for Gingerbread Brisket! My famous Candy-cane Latkes!" But already the peonies are reaching up out of the ground, Birdy's every exhalation tells a fragrant story of chives, and our dogwood is covered in fattening buds (you know, swelling, not caloric). Which means it's time for Matzoh Lamb Cake and Jelly Bean Tsimmes and my famous Kosher Ham Macaroons!

But… Read More

*Fish* with Brown Butter Sauce

Posted March 21, 2010
I really don't recall a time when I opened up Gourmet magazine to find, alongside its glorious twilit pictures of spring chickens and watermelon granita, scathing observations about maddening photo shoots and tearful models. Really, it was all way too seamless for meta-commentary: the photographer had simply stumbled upon a dinner party that happened to be taking place in a lantern-strung beach cabana, the twelve or so sleekly tanned and barefoot guests nibbling moodily on their boquerones, sipping moodily from… Read More

Thai Coconut Chicken Soup

Posted March 15, 2010
Michael and I spent two weeks in Thailand years ago, and my memories have organized themselves into a kind of sensory scrapbook: the smells of the night market (fish sauce, grilling meat, river); the chanting of monks that blurred, at dawn, into the revving of motorcycles; the delightful curved roofs of the houses and buildings; the surprising weight of the heat whenever you went outside--like a wet monkey dropped onto your head from a great height. We were evacuated by… Read More
