Knock, knock! It's Santa!

The Cheese had a simple question a few weeks ago.

"Mama?  How will Santa get into our house if we don't have a chimney?"

Good question.  Our townhouse that we currently call home doesn't have a fireplace.  No fireplace, no chimney.  I didn't answer my son right away, but instead told him that I wasn't sure and that I would find out for him.  I thought about telling him that Santa no longer needs a chimney, that he uses his magic to get inside, but I knew that that answer would only create more questions.  It was at a local holiday boutique that I found the answer that my son was looking for.

At the sale I found Santa's Key.  This large metal key is attached to a long ribbon with instructions to hang it on your front door on Christmas Eve.  Next to the key is a compass with an arrow that will point to words like "sleeping", "awake", "naughty", and "nice".  It explains on the back of the compass that once Santa puts the key into your front door the compass gives Santa important information about the children inside.

Along with the key I found Santa's Stopwatch.  This oversized pocket watch, with the initials "SC" on the outside, includes a dial with the names of the continents and several countries.  This is the watch that Santa uses to stop time so he is able to travel all around the world on Christmas Eve.  How cool!

So I bought both without hesitation.  They would not only solve my problem of finding an answer to the Cheese's question, but also add a little more magic to my children's holiday experience.  Now I had the problem of how to give them to my children.

I devised a plan.  We had already visited Santa at the mall where the Cheese had read his Christmas list to Santa that he had written all by himself.  So I decided to have Santa send the key and watch via UPS.  I found a fancy candy cane striped box at Target to put them in, then I wrote a letter to go along with it and place them both inside a box that I had saved from an eBay purchase.  I even typed out a fancy looking packing slip, just to make it official.

Here's what Santa's letter said:

 Dear Cheese and Monkey,

Thank you for coming to visit me last week at the mall.  Cheese-you did such a good job reading me your Christmas list.  I can tell that you have been learning a lot in kindergarten.  And Monkey-you were such a good listener while your brother was reading.  What nice brothers you both are.

I heard that you were a little worried about not having a chimney at your house for me to slide down, so I have sent you something very special.  I have given both of you one of my special keys-it lets me get into anyone’s house who doesn’t have a chimney.  Just leave it hanging on your front door on Christmas Eve.

Also, since the two of you have been so good this year, I am sending you one of my stopwatches.  This is the stopwatch that I use on Christmas Eve.  It lets me stop time so I am able to deliver toys to all of the good little boys and girls all over the world.  Be sure to share it with each other and please be very careful with it.

Continue to be good between now and Christmas.  Remember to be good for goodness sake!

Ho, Ho, Ho,
Santa Claus

May your home be filled with lots of magic this holiday season.  Merry Christmas!
