The Cheese has been going to kindergarten for one hundred days and oh my, what a big deal it is.

Today is all about the number 100.  Ever since the first day of school the kindergartners have been waiting for this day.  Early in the school year I remember the Cheese telling me, "...and when we get to 100 days of school we get to have a party!"  So everything today will be about the number 100. 

The Cheese had to bring 100 of something--paper clips, marbles, anything that would fit into a large Ziploc baggie.  Of course, he chose to take 100 Legos.  This was a harder task than I had expected.  The Cheese can count to 100 all by himself, but counting all by itself and actually counting 100 of something are quite different.  Let's just say that he had to start over for losing track more than once.

I'll be curious to hear about everything that he did today, I just hope that he'll talk about it.  Regardless, I have been so impressed with all of the things that he has been learning about this year.  Earlier this week he came home telling me all about the Chinese New Year.  He has been especially interested in the Chinese Zodiac since each Chinese New Year is linked to one of the twelve animals in the zodiac.  He was disappointed to learn that he was born in the year of the horse instead of the tiger, which he preferred.

He made a good-luck dragon puppet (another symbol of the Chinese New Year often seen in parades) and came home with stickers of the Chinese symbols for words like strength and peace.  He also came home with a lucky red envelope which is common for children to receive during the New Year.  Inside was a fake paper 100 dollar bill (his teacher doing a great job of combining the two big class events this week.) 

I love that my son is learning all about other cultures.  I think that is such an important part of a school's curriculum because it teaches children that learning to appreciate and accept other cultures is important.  Best of all, the Cheese is learning about these other traditions in fun and exciting ways which sparks his interest to learn more and ask questions. 

What excites me most is seeing his intelligence grow.  In the last 100 days of school, my son has learned to read site words, use guess-n-go spelling, and write words other than just his name.  He learned about all of the different December celebrations of Hanukah, Kwanza, and Christmas.  He celebrated Thanksgiving as a pilgrim at a large feast.  He talks about getting stickers in Writing Workshop and how his favorite game in P.E. is kick ball.  I am so jealous that he gets to have so much fun every day--the beauty of learning and not even knowing it. 

I can't wait to see what the next 100 days will bring!
