Reading about raising my boys while on vacaton

I am officially on vacation.  It's been 10 months since my last vacation without my children, and that was only for three nights.  I had just started to relax and have fun when it was time to go home.  This time, it is for five whole nights and six days!  I am so excited I can hardly stand it.

Don't let me fool you.  We went on plenty of vacations this summer and fun was had by all.  (I probably had more fun than anyone!)  But a vacation without your children is something all together different.  I remember hearing Dr. Phil talk once about the importance for parents to spend time away from their children.  Not that I'm a huge advocate of Dr. Phil's, but I do agree with him on this point.  Going away--for an extended period of time--is a good thing.  It's a time to renew, refresh, recharge, and that's exactly what I plan to do.

Even though it's a work related trip for The Golfer, it is still an opportunity for the two of us to reconnect.  We often fall into the trap that most parents find themselves in.  For the most part, our lives revolve around our children and what they are and aren't doing.  There's dinner to make, laundry to do, homework to finish, poopy diapers to change, messes to clean up, etc.  We try our best to reconnect after the kids are in bed, but by that time we are so worn out, we could care less.

Even this morning, the first hour of our car ride included talk about the kids.  Then it was silent.  For a few moments it was almost as if we didn't have anything to talk to each other about.  Then for some odd reason we began talking about whether or not we wanted to be buried or cremated when we die.  Morbid?  A little.  But an important conversation for any couple to have.  Eventually we found ourselves off the topic and on to others, and most importantly, we found our way back to each other.

So here we are, at a beautiful resort in Central California enjoying the bliss and peace that God created in a little canyon close to the middle of nowhere special.  It's gorgeous here and best of all, it's quiet!  I never realized how LOUD our lives are until you find yourself sitting amongst the peace and quiet.  At home, we have at least one television on constantly.  There is the hum of the computer, the buzz of the microwave, the barking of the dog, the screaming of the kids.  It's all enough to make you want to buy a year's supply of ear plugs.

The next six days, I plan to do nothing but soak up the peacefulness.  Our villa includes a little patio on a hill overlooking the golf course that sits down in the canyon.  I brought along three books,  four magazines, and my Sudoku puzzle book and I plan to finish reading them all.  I plan to eat all of my meals in peace without having to tell someone to finish their milk or try a green bean.  I have a massage booked, a wine tasting, and a manicure/pedicure to occupy my time while my husband works.

I may never go home.
