Welcome the Tooth Fairy!

Last night the Cheese Eater lost his first tooth.

It had been lose for over a week now, so we had been expecting it.  I just couldn't believe that it was happening.  I mean, it was just yesterday that we were marveling at that same tooth making its first appearance.  Now, here it was in the palm of my hand, all white and tiny and there was a hole in my son's face.

We had already explained the Tooth Fairy back when we introduced the Moving Fairy.  (The Moving Fairy is someone that we invented last year when we moved to California.  She gets to your new house before you do and leaves a new toy in your new room, which is a good thing when all of the toys are packed away.)  So, the minute his tooth fell out, he was ready for bed.

Usually I have to nag him about putting on his p.j.'s, brushing his teeth and settling down, but not last night.  He did everything in record time, quickly laying down and shutting his eyes tight without the usual, "I want another story" or "I want a drink of water."  Unbelievable.

Now I had decision to make.  How generous was the Tooth Fairy going to be?  The Golfer and I had saved a few Kennedy half dollars and a couple of Sacagawea gold dollars just for the occasion.  I decided that since this was the first tooth, she would leave one of the gold dollars--something special that he had never seen before.

At 7:27 AM, the Cheese Eater was in my face with his gold dollar.

"Look what the Tooth Fairy gave me!  What is it?"

"That's a special gold dollar, Buddy."

"Wow!  A whole dollar!  Now I can buy anything I want!"

How young and innocent is the child who has no concept of money.
