A yummy back-to-school craft
2 |
I wish I could take credit for this cute idea, but this fun back-to-school treat comes from Family Fun magazine. These "Candy Crayons," from the September '04 issue, are so easy to make. I made them as part of the party favors for the Cheese Eater's crayon coloring themed birthday party, but they are a perfect treat for your little one who is getting ready to head to pre-school or kindergarten. "Candy Crayons" are quick and inexpensive, and best of all, an easy cooking craft that your child can help you with.
What you'll need:
Wilton's Candy Melts (I found my at Michael's--red, blue, yellow, and green.)
Pretzel Rods (I used Synder's, but there's several great store brands out there.)
Construction paper to match the colors of the Candy Melts
Double-sided tape
Wax paper
Black marker
Directions:
1. First, cut each pretzel rod in half. You can use a serrated knife for a cleaner cut. I liked a little jagged edge to give it more of a life-like look.
2. Melt the candy in your microwave according to package directions. Have your child help with dipping the ends of each half into the melted candy. Then, set pretzels on wax paper to harden.
3. While waiting for the candy to harden, cut construction paper in strips to cover the exposed part of the pretzel. Using a black magic marker, decorate each strip to look like a crayon. This is another easy part that your child can help with.
4. Once pretzels are ready, wrap construction paper around each and secure with tape. I used double-sided tape so it wasn't noticeable.
Clean up tip: I used disposable bowls to melt the candy. Once candy hardens, cleaning off the candy can be a pain.
This is such a quick and simple treat that looks so impressive and just like the big, fat crayons that we all used in kindergarten. When I made them for the Cheese Eater's party, it took me about an hour from start to finish to make enough for around 20 party baggies worth, which could easily be enough for your son or daughter's class. My kids loved them and for the parents, you'll feel good that you're giving them a fun-to-eat treat that's not too sweet!
Family Fun magazine is filled with great ideas and crafts to do with your kids. I definitely recommend it for families with preschoolers and above.
