She's Growing Up Too Fast

Over the past week, Cordy has perfected the ability to turn on her bedroom light. With this new-found skill, she can now turn her light on when she wakes at Unholy O'clock in the morning, a time when even the sun isn't ready to come up yet. Doesn't bother me, since the light isn't waking me up. The one downside to this is it means she's less likely to go back to sleep now when she wakes at 4:30am. (Seriously - I told you it was unholy o'clock in the morning.) So even though her bedtime has been creeping back slightly in the evenings, she's still getting up just as early as before.

But having the ability to turn on her light still doesn't stop her from wanting out of her room. Usually after a half hour or so of being awake, we hear a knocking at the door. She knocks or bangs on her door, occasionally adding, "Daddy? Open the door, daddy." Don't worry, she's not crying or screaming or anything like that. It's simply a request, and if not met, she usually goes back to playing in her room, only to try again in another 15-20 minutes.

She does try to open the door, too, but we put one of those child safety knob covers on the door. The only way to open the door is to grasp the two plastic buttons and push them in while turning the doorknob. Impossible for a small child to open, right?

So you can imagine how surprised I was this morning when Cordy's voice waked me from my dreamless sleep at 6:45am (I don't sleep enough to have dreams right now). "Mommy, Dora has a star!" I looked at my nightstand, wondering how her voice sounded so clear over the monitor, and then my blurry gaze shifted down the bed slightly to a not-so-small child standing there, showing me her Dora doll.

Aaron was already awake (he's an early riser, too), so I guessed that he had let her out of her room and she had wandered back upstairs after eating breakfast. I got out of bed and led her out of the room, but then I looked down the stairs and noticed it was still pitch black downstairs. Cordy's door was closed, but the light was on inside, and the bathroom door was closed with the light on.

I opened the door to find Aaron in the bath. "Did you get Cordy up?" I asked. "No, I heard her knocking at her door, and I was going to let her out after my bath." Then Cordy walked in to the bathroom and said to my surprised husband, "Daddy's taking a bath!"

We have no idea how she got out of her room. The door was completely closed last night. And not only did she get out of her room, and then close the door behind her, she went downstairs in the dark to get her Dora, which was on the kitchen floor when we went to bed last night.

So now we need to decide if we should install a gate at the top of the stairs, since the doorknob cover doesn't seem to be working. I'm both scared and impressed with her new escape skills. I wonder what new skill is she going to surprise us with?
