Product Review: Halo Sleep Sack

Now that the weather has (finally) started to cool, Mira can no longer sleep in her bassinet in just a onesie. Blankets are generally considered a big no-no for infants, so other ways of keeping her warm had to be found.
When Cordy was a baby, we used the Halo Sleep Sack to keep her warm at night. At the time, it only came in a fleece sack, but since she was born in the fall, with winter close behind, the fleece sleep sack worked just fine. However, right now it's cool at night, but not so cold that Mira needs to be wrapped in fleece.
When I went to the local baby superstore, I was surprised to find they now make the sleep sack in lightweight cotton. It's just enough to provide a little extra warmth, but no so much that it overheats her.
For anyone who hasn't seen these, a sleep sack is a large sleeveless cloth "bag" with a zipper down the front and a closed bottom. You put the baby in it, slip the baby's arms through the armholes, and then zip it closed. Unlike a blanket, there's no way the sleep sack could slip over your child's face, so it's safe to use in a crib. And the zipper starts at the top, near the neckline, and zips downwards to prevent the infant from scratching their chin on a zipper pull.
Also, unlike a blanket, the sleep sack is completely enclosed at the bottom, so little feet will never find their way out to become cold. Knowing that she can't kick it off in her sleep is a big advantage for me. It also received a "#1 Safe Sleep Product" gold seal from the First Candle/SIDS alliance.
The fabrics are soft and cuddly, and the sleep sack is machine washable. It can be worn over a diaper, with a onesie, or with a full sleeper underneath for maximum warmth.
Mira was a little resistant to her sleep sack at first. Unable to grab her toes, she didn't appreciate having her bottom half confined in fabric. But she seems to have adjusted to the change now, and I think the sleep sack has helped keep her wakings to a minimum at night. At least I know she's not waking up because she's cold.
The Halo Sleep Sack comes in a variety of colors, and is available in fleece, cotton, or organic cotton. You can find it at many different retailers, and right now, Babies 'R Us is running a special where you can buy one and get the second for half off. Now is a good time to stock up for the winter months!
