Enjoying the Fun of Fall

I love this time of year.

There's something about these days, with the crisp breeze, the warm sun, the brilliant blue sky, and the trees turning beautiful shades of yellow, orange and red that fills me with happiness. Fall is my favorite season, and despite the overly warm days we've had this year, I am determined to take it in as much as possible.

This past weekend we made our annual trek to the pumpkin patch. This particular farm is owned by the parents of a fellow blogger, about an hour north of where I live. You couldn't ask for a more perfect representation of the countryside in fall than you'd see at this farm: fields overflowing with bright orange pumpkins, a barn with farm animals to pet, a corn maze, local apple cider and crafts, horse-drawn hay rides to the fields, etc. It makes me wish, just for a moment, to live in the country.

Last year, Cordy had a great time at the pumpkin patch, while I walked around feeling sick. (I was 9 weeks pregnant at the time.) This year, we had another great time, with no nausea to spoil anything.

Cordy once again loved the kids' barn. The petting zoo was a big hit, and she especially loved the pigs. She followed them from the front to the side of their pen, watching them move around and trying to get their attention. The barn also had a straw bale maze for the little kids. It had an entrance, but no exit - smart thinking - so parents didn't have to be stationed at more than one post. Cordy ran through it several times while Mira watched her in my arms.

We then ventured out into the field to choose a pumpkin. There were several good choices left, even though we were already halfway through October. My friend Kristi walked through the field with us, pulling her daughters in a wagon, while Cordy ran at my husband's side, and Mira was carried by me. After looking, tapping on, and turning several pumpkins, we found two we liked. Kristi found an interesting pumpkin that looked like a giant pepper. We loaded all of the pumpkins into the wagon and hauled it back to the car.

On the way home, Cordy had one pumpkin beside her, and the other at her feet. She couldn't have been happier. For the entire drive, we got to hear, "I have a pumpkin! I like pumpkins! Cordy can eat the pumpkin!" Once home, we placed the pumpkins in the front yard, along with a pumpkin we already had, and Cordy carefully counted them to make sure all three of her pumpkins were there.

It was a gorgeous day, and we all had a really good time at the farm. I hope this will be a tradition my family can enjoy every year.
