Product review: Balmex diaper cream

It lives up to its claims
We have used Balmex zinc oxide ointment since Hamlet was a baby. We had a bunch of those sample tubes you get in the OB/GYN welcome packet, and found we liked Balmex the best of all. For one thing, it doesn't smell like cod. In fact, it doesn't have much of a smell--the faint odor of baby powder, perhaps. This is important; breastmilk poop has an almost sweet, mild scent, so an overpowering diaper rash or barrier cream can mask it.
Balmex also wipes off most easily of any other cream we've tried. This is a small detail, but becomes significant when your baby has a yeast infection--you need to be able to put an antifungal cream on the yeast first, so a cream that's smeared across the area and takes more than one wipe to clean can be frustrating.
Finally, Balmex lives up to its claim that it reduces redness in one diaper change. It's unusual to find a product that does what it says it will, so for a product that affects your baby's comfort--that's enough to make a loyal customer out of me!
