Parents of picky eaters, take heart

I found this helpful Thank You! Your vote will be tallied soon!

Two years ago we had a problem: Hamlet would only eat Flavor Blasted Cheddar Goldfish. He was eating Goldfish for breakfast, Goldfish for lunch, Goldfish for dinner, and Goldfish for snacks. And he was constipated.

Friends, and his speech therapist, advised us to put our parental foot down and tell him that Goldfish were not an option except as a treat. "He won't starve himself," they assured us. "He might refuse a meal or even two, but it won't last." As predicted, it was incredibly hard, those first few days. But it worked.

These days, Hamlet still isn't the world's best eater. We sneak fruits and veggies into him via V8 Fusion juice and Edy's all-fruit popsicles, and most days he only wants waffles, spaghetti, rice, or hot dogs for dinner. But he's also found that new things aren't all bad. Apples, for instance, cut up and without their skin. Or broccoli and chickpeas sauteed in extra-virgin olive oil and garlic.

So take heart, parents of picky eaters, who struggle with family and friends who sneer at your children's idiosyncrasies because they think you're too lenient. Your kids may appear to be part of a vast toddler conspiracy, but think of it this way: could the sheer creativity belie a genius in the house?
