Three years of lovin'

Just as Boris is showing a need for a comfort object of some kind, Hamlet is showing signs of giving his up. It's an interesting process to witness, especially as he periodically pretends to be a baby.

He first attached to "Arf," his lime green beagle, when he was three months old. It was around the same time that he learned to suck his thumb, so before long, he was fingering the dog's ears as he sucked. Soon after that, he figured out that he could use thumb and lovey to get to sleep, through car rides, and pretty much any stressful situation he found himself in.

And so it's been for years. Arf has come with us everywhere, including the grocery store--until recently.

Over the last few weeks, Hamlet has wanted to leave Arf in the car when we visit the mall. Even when he began to have problems in his preschool with another child, Arf stayed behind. It's a striking difference from the beginning of the school year, when he'd hide under the activity table with Arf each time the kids got to be too much for him.

He's less dependent on Arf at home, too. He sucks his thumb for shorter durations; the number of times he asks for him has decreased as well.

All in all, it seems my little boy is growing up. Can potty training be far behind?
