Was there really a time when I worried whether Jack would ever talk? Now I have to ask, will he ever stop?
I know that one day I will stumble upon that small tape recorder, which I spent hours holding close to his head willing him to make an utterance of any type. In other words, I have hours of tape recordings of baby gurgles. Who was that woman? Ah well, things progress and one day, almost out of the blue you find yourself with a fully formed person chatting your ear off with observations, thoughts or mostly, general demands.
That's not to say that a talking toddler or preschooler does not require interpretation. On the contrary, there is a well defined code all parents soon learn to crack. For example,
They say: (crying) " I door to be open the inside and then tree first". Should be interpreted as: "I am very tired and/or hungry and am having a hard time managing my words and emotions."
They say: "I love you sooo much". Should be interpreted as "I know I'm in big trouble, but did I mention I was usually charming?"
They say: "Your hair is so soft and pretty". Should be interpreted as "I would like to delay my bedtime by minutes, or preferably hours, by engaging you in flattery."
I do love to listen to Jack's ramblings on in the car. He suspects everyone is headed to the same place we are until they make an route deviation at which point it becomes imperative that I be alerted to this. I often hear a loud, "Uh ohhhhhhh, oh they are NOT going to the li-brar-eee, are they going to work or to home? Mommy, they are NOT going to the library." It's very challenging to keep track of all the people NOT taking our exact route and there is something fun about having a little air traffic controller sitting in the back seat giving it a go.
