The Hidden Dangers of Maternity Clothes

I found this helpful Thank You! Your vote will be tallied soon!

Pregnancy is fraught with danger.   Not the least of which are maternity clothes.  The first problem is that while you know deep down that the clothes are never truly "in style", you cling to the hope that you will at least be able wear them again for the next pregnancy.   However if you leave any longer than a six month gap between pregnancies, you will soon find that "maternity fashion" has a short shelf life.

After discovering this sad fact, I headed out to the stores to try to fragment together some sort of clothing dignity to get me through the next few months.   As anyone who has been there knows, trying on maternity items involves yanking on one item of clothing after another, while you marvel at how quickly you can be transformed into a hideous beast with a few yards of bad fabric.   It takes a lot of work and dedication to find something that passes as non-offensive.   This is how I also learned that buying Maternity clothes can be expensive.   Especially when you don't notice that you have lost a diamond earring trying on those million shirts and "no one at the store can find it".   Thus making this the most costly pregnancy ever (though insured, in hindsight the high deductible wasn't such a smart move), this baby better be super charming (and shiny) is all I'm saying.

The other danger of maternity clothes is that they are designed to accommodate a 30 to 50 pound weight gain without much fuss, so it's easy to drift from nutritional discipline.   I gained virtually no weight until I switched to maternity clothes at which point my most common thought became: "Ah what the heck, I'm not thin anymore anyway and I know full well I'm wearing a stretch maternity shirt tomorrow that bells out around the waist".   I don't need to dwell on the after-effects of this type of thinking but suffice it to say unless someone is having sextuplets I suspect they are going to be pretty unsatisfied with the results of this once they give birth.   In fact, people in this situation may cling to those maternity clothes for an unhealthy period of time after having the baby, perhaps even up to the point that they are ready for another baby and discover that no one wants to participate with them in that until they are out of those maternity clothes and back to resembling something of a human form.
