I found this helpful Thank You! Your vote will be tallied soon!

So I didn't get a huge response on my grand unveiling of the best white icing recipe ever.  Ok, I get it, you're health conscious.  In a world where laws are passed to allow prosecution of those who use partially hydrogenated vegetable oil, writing about a butter-based frosting was probably the wrong way to go.  Speaking of which, I'm not a fan of trans-fat but have you tried the new Lay's potato chips since they switched to sunflower oil?  It's a sad time for my family.  We mourn chips that didn't taste slightly rancid.

Anyway, I decided to redeem myself and write about America's favorite snack, apples.  Oh sure, cardiac surgeons everywhere might debate this as being the item most American's reach for when hunger hits, but stay with me.  If apples are underused in American society today, I know why.

People are making major apple mistakes.

I saw it first hand again at the grocery store on Saturday.  A long row of apples, people milling over the selection.  Picking the reddest, biggest, shiniest apples.  I wanted to weep at their naivete.

Here's what you need to know about apples: FUJI.  They aren't the prettiest.  They aren't the shiniest.  They often in fact look a little forlorn.  However, they are what apples are all about, especially when chilled.  They are crisp and sweet, never mealy, never bland.  They just rock it out.  In a Fuji-less emergency, I will also temporarily approve the purchase of a Gala.  And for pies, since we all know you are dumping 6 cups of sugar on them anyway, tart Granny Smith's also appear on the approved-apple list.

America, I know how tempting it is to buy those big red apples that look like apples in cartoon, but I implore you not to be fooled.  If you try a Fuji, you will never go back.
