We finally got television back and I'm now nostalgic for the six days we spent without it. I knew this would happen; I have vague recollections of being without a TV for a period in college and by the time we found a new one, we wondered why we needed it in the first place. For about 30 seconds anyway, at which point we were addicted again.
This time, after a period of time where we left the TV on with it's blue screen hoping for some divine Direct TV miracle, we finally shut it off. Being without TV does take some getting used to (see my irritable meltdown here) and tends to involve being largely ostracized by the rest of civilization, as evidenced by yesterday's exchange with a coworker:
Matt: Did you watch Bill Maher?
Amy: I watch nothing
Matt: He had the whole scoop last nite
Amy: Remember my TV situation?
Matt: Ah
Amy: I am living in the 1800's with electricity...I'm hoping to get a telegram today to finish off the whole effect
Amy: In fact, my Dad almost left after driving 600 miles for a visit and finding out we didn't have TV. You would have thought I told him he had to sleep in the backyard with the squirrels
Aside from these difficulties, it was nice to respond to Jack's requests for TV with "The TVs broken, remember?" No fights over "one more Dora" or losing my husband to an afternoon of watching sports on TV. I did miss my late night Discovery Channel watching, but on the bright side got through the backlog of magazine my husband constantly complains about (he's right, I did over-order and once you subscribe to a magazine these days its virtually impossible to stop it from coming for the next 10 years). It was wonderful to hang out without the background noise and spend more time with Jack outside, doing puzzles or reading or just talking; truly superior entertainment.
Now, if only we had enough willpower to turn off a WORKING TV.
