Potty Training Update: The Battle of the Wills (we lost)
0 |
I can't wait for the Just Amy blog post in about 17 months on how we finally trained a "challenged potty trainer". I'm giving myself another year and half because I figure he will be close to five years old by then, so we should have a really strong progress report to share.
Grrr.
Having just read Dr Mommy KC's blog post about her daughter training in exchange for a single M&M, I thought, why do doctors have all the luck? As if I am not jealous enough of doctors anyway, secretly believing I was meant to be a brilliant surgeon (except I'm not a huge fan of blood or of cutting into skin). We have tried stickers and charts, full 2lb bags of M&Ms, Skittles, Mint Oreos, trips to the airport, threats, cajoles, no TV, extra TV, no outside, no car trips, special toys and presents, clapping, acting like its no big deal, acting likes it's a huge deal, saying he is a big boy, saying he is a baby, potty books, potty stories, not letting him wearing diapers or pull ups.
Well sure, we sound like lunatics, no wonder the boy isn't trained.
Actually what we have here is a case of stubbornness. He doesn't need a slight reward or instructions how, he knows exactly how, has done it and yet, refuses to do it on an ongoing basis. Re-Fuse-Es. My son is being a knucklehead.
We did finally stick him in pull ups and force him to change himself, but he still won't use the potty. It is clear that he will not use the potty until he decides that it suits him. Which i hope is by the first week in September when preschool starts. I will be one ticked mama if he misses Fall preschool over this.
Anyway, I can't wait to tell you all what finally cracked the code for the classic fable of "the headstrong non-potty-trained-boy", but you may want to check back in 2009.
