Stay-at-home dads get their due

Posted June 18, 2007
I couldn't have been happier to see this Washington Post article about stay-at-home dads today.

When I'm home during the day, I see lots of dads pushing strollers and playing in the park, but I still only see ads for moms groups on the bulletin boards in town.

My husband is a work-at-home dad who has structured his work schedule so he can take care of our girls. It has worked out really well for us.

When our daughters were born in 2003, I stayed at home with them for five months on maternity leave. When my maternity leave ran out and I had to go back to work full time, my husband quit his day job so that he could take care of the girls.

Now, our girls go to nursery school in the morning so that my husband can work. He picks them up from school and gives them lunch and… Read More

How much do I love that my daughters' nursery school helps the kids make Father's Day gifts?

It's great to have a helping hand with any kind of holiday preparation. They made these perfectly funky pencil holders out of cans and adorable cards decorated with sea horses.

At home, I helped my daughters paint pictures for my husband. This was no huge deal, really, but it did require an evening's worth of setting up the paints and the… Read More

Manners, please

Posted June 15, 2007
When my husband and I first had kids, we didn't think we'd be bringing our girls up having to adhere to all the strict manners we were brought up with.

But, for example, we didn't think it was necessary to have to say, "May I please be excused from the table?" in order to… Read More
This is an ugly child-proofing solution, but we're really glad we did it.

We have railings over a high staircase, like in this photo, and it made me worry terribly when my twin daughters started to crawl. So we ordered this plastic shield, the " Clear Banister Guard Kit" from One Step Ahead, and my husband and my father installed it one day to humor me.

I think it was a little tricky to install,… Read More

Every kid deserves a great dress-up chest, stocked with all sorts of dime store treasures. Ours is full of beaded necklaces, sunglasses, party hats, school-made hats, tutus, fairy wands, silk scarves, lacy scarves, bandannas, rain boots, cowboy boots, stuff I don't use anymore, all sorts of terrific junk.

Recently, they've acquired velvety capes from their grandmother, and they're just starting to get into those, too.

We have lots of photos of my daughters in their get-ups. It's so… Read More

Enticing reluctant boy readers

Posted June 10, 2007
While checking in on LAObserved.com, my favorite site to see up-to-the-minute news about Los Angeles, I found a link to this Los Angeles Times article about books to share with young boy readers.

It's called " How to hook the reluctant boy reader," and it's a terrific resource.

In addition to containing some tips, the article has a great list of comics and books that the article's author - a mom of two young boys… Read More
