The First Cut.

This idea of college tuition for the kids has been weighing heavily on my mind. Around tax time it hits me particularly hard because I see the statements from my college loan lenders reminding me how much I paid them last year for the privilege of borrowing money for college and law school. Trust me, it's a lot. It's the kind of money that makes my mother cry. I borrowed enough that, together with interest, I could have bought the… Read More

March 17 isn't just St. Patrick's Day... this year, it marks exactly one month until Tax Day. That's right, this year Tax Day, traditionally April 15, fell on a Sunday. In keeping with IRS rules, that means that Tax Day would move to the next business day which would be April 16... only this year, due to holidays in New England the DC area, the IRS has extended tax day yet another day so that if falls on Read More

One of the cool things about being a gardener hobbyist is that spring really does bring surprises. I have no plot plan. There is no landscape diagram. I've planted bulbs around the yard throughout the years and what… Read More

The kids were with me at the office today. It's tax season. I'm a tax attorney. I can't be away too much, nanny or no nanny.

Yep, there's still no word on the nanny front.

It's awfully difficult finding a nanny. There are so many things that have to fall into place: scheduling, geography, personality, comfort level and finances. Yes, finances matter.

It's not all about the money - and you should never be made to feel… Read More

Katie started school this year. I realized as she put her little backpack on and headed out the door, that she was growing up. It was all at once overwhelming.

A few month's later, I was once again overwhelmed when I realized that I would be paying the equivalent of my college tuition every year for the next thirteen years assuming that Katie remains at her current school. *Gulp* And I have two more kids to go...
