Dealing with deployment

Posted December 08, 2007

It's been a tough time at the DrMommyKC household.

We recently found out that my husband, who is in the Navy, has been selected to be deployed to Iraq shortly after our baby is due.

At first, it seemed unbelieveable, especially at this important time in our family. Don't they know I'm pregnant and about to give birth? Wouldn't that be a reason not to send him?

Then, the reality sunk in that in these matters, family has no bearing on who is… Read More

5 more weeks to go until my due date and our nursery is still an empty room. Scratch that. It does bear the contents of one box of Christmas wrapping paper that we never relocated after moving into our house in February. And the pack-n-play. So there's that.

It's not to say we haven't been trying to prepare. We ordered new furniture for Jolie way back in September, planning to move her crib, dresser, and glider into the baby's room since… Read More

No sooner had we cleared off the table from our Thanksgiving feast that I started to think about putting up the Christmas Tree. We're lame and have an artificial tree- but it's PURDY.

A few years ago, I saw it as a floor model at a department store and fell in love with it. I wanted to buy it but it was the last one in stock...so they let me buy the floor model!

Pregnancy Horrors: Reflux

Posted November 26, 2007

Ah....REFLUX. What a lovely sensation of burning chest pain - that special sensation that only acid in the esophagus can generate!

So special.

And so my new reality.

Somehow, I got away with not experiencing reflux (or GERD as its often affectionately called in medical circles, Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease) during my first pregnancy, but for the past week or so, I've really had an escalation of symptoms.

As in, I'M HAVING IT RIGHT NOW. AND NOW. AND NOW.

Sigh. Lord, don't you think I've suffered… Read More

It's the night before Thanksgiving and...

The turkey's brined.

Cranberry sauce chilled.

Gravy base made.

Sweet potatoes whipped.

Butternut squash battled. (Limbs intact)

Stuffing assembled.

And I am UTTERLY POOPED.

Boy, I had no idea it would take so much out of me to do cooking while in my 33/34 week preggers state. No idea. I'm so not taking standing for granted again. Cooking and standing. Standing and cooking. My back muscles are screaming out in a lovely choral agony: WHAT HAVE YOU DONE TO US, WOMAN?

I've… Read More

One day this past week, it suddenly dawned on me that Thanksgiving was *gulp* a little over a week away.

I felt faint.

You see, I had made the decision to host Thanksgiving dinner at our house this year, seemingly forgetting several important points. 1) I am 33 weeks pregnant, 2) I have a toddler, 3) I am taking a graduate class with a MEGA PAPER due the Monday after Thanksgiving, 4) I work full-time, 5) I tend to overachieve in the kitchen and… Read More

About Me

When I'm not writing here or at Where's My Cape?, I can be found practicing internal medicine, teaching, chasing my daughter, and not sleeping nearly enough. I don't trust squirrels farther than I can throw them.
