Mama's Kindergarten Chronicles: A is for Already Learning

"I had a fun day at school!"

After only five days into kindergarten, it is apparent that my son is already getting a good education.

"Mommy?  Do you know what 'nocturnal' means?" the Cheese Eater asked me at the dinner table.

"Yes.  Do you know what it means?" I replied.  Honestly, I was taken aback by his question.  For him to be using such a big word, I figured that he must have heard it at school.

"It means when animals go to bed in the morning and wake up at night." He correctly informed me with a smile as big as Texas.

"That's right!  Where did you learn that?  Did you learn that today at school?"

I was impressed!  My son has impressed me with his knowledge of shapes, colors, and the alphabet prior to this.  But this, this was like REAL learning.  My smile was more around the size of  Montana.

"Yeah.  I'd learnt it on Back-to-School Night."

"You learned it," I said while trying to put extra emphasis on the end of the word, "and I'm so proud of you for putting it somewhere in your brain to remember it."

But better than the early knowledge that the Cheese Eater seems to be obtaining is the fact that he absolutely loves going to school every day.  Since he is an afternoon kindergartner, he spends the mornings asking, "Is it time to go to school yet?"  One can only hope that this enthusiasm will continue all the way through high school.

For me, well, this whole school-every-day thing has taken some getting used to.  My days are now built around 11:30 drop-off and the 3:00 pick-up.  So far I haven't forgotten to put a healthy snack in his back pack, and starting next week we'll have homework every night.  It's been a week now and I can feel the routine slowly starting to sink in.
