Egg carton picnics

Posted June 06, 2007

When I was a kid, I got to do lots of special things. They weren't elaborate or extravagant, but they made a big difference in the quality of my childhood.

One of the things that we would do was go on egg carton picnics. In the days before snack-sized plastic baggies, my mom would take an empty egg carton and filled each little hole with healthy finger foods: raisins, peanuts, banana slices, grapes, cheese, wheat crackers, Goldfish, baby carrots,… Read More

The New Parent Coffee Disaster

Posted June 04, 2007
Walking into the cafeteria/auditorium area, I felt that awkward feeling you get when you're trying to act cool when in reality you don't have a clue. I quickly took note of my surroundings. All of the chairs for the new parents were grouped together into circles. Some parents were already seated, enjoying a muffin and maybe some coffee. Some parents were quietly milling about. And as I stood there with my two children, I noticed something else: there weren't any… Read More

Mama's Latest Find is a basic, Modern Mother Must Have, or MMMH (as in, "MMMH! What a good idea!") This nice event is held to introduce the school: let the parents meet the principal and the teachers, hear about the curriculum and the PTA, and get a short tour of the classrooms. It's a very nice… Read More

So many books, so little time

Posted May 26, 2007

I'm a writer, which means that I am also a reader. Unfortunately, the stack of books on my bedside table remains untouched due to the fact that I can never find the time to read. I have spent a good portion of my meager mad money on books that I am either too tired or too busy to read. Frustrating? Uh, yeah.

Sometimes I daydream about spending a quiet Saturday afternoon all by myself, just reading and enjoying some much deserved alone time. … Read More

Oh yeah, my diet: Part 2

Posted May 23, 2007

I have good intentions. I tell you I do. It's the follow through that I have a problem with.

I started this diet for several good reasons. I wanted to be healthier for my boys. I wanted to feel good in a bathing suit this summer. I wanted to accomplish something I have never done before--lose weight while on a diet.

Well, somewhere along the way I stopped wanting to be healthy and just wanted the chocolate. My problem--as far as eating is… Read More
