Brief Description:
My friend's son, Marques, loves basketball. To celebrate his 5th birthday, I made a basketball jersey cake. This cake is super-easy to make. I picked his favorite team color for the jersey, then wrote his name and number in white, outlined in yellow. The C above his name identifies his favorite basketball team, the Cleveland Cavs. It was a big hit at his sports-themed birthday party and best of all, he loved it!
Ingredients:
2 boxes yellow cake mix
Add following ingredients, according to box directions:
4-6 eggs
1/2 cup oil
2 1/2 water
Approx. 5 cups buttercream icing, colored as follows:
3 cups maroon icing
1/4 cup navy icing
1 cup white icing
3/4 cup gold icing
Mix the following ingredients to make the buttercream icing:
1 1/2 sticks butter
3/4 cup shortening
1/3 cup water
1 tsp. vanilla
1 1/2 lb. powdered sugar

Mix the following ingredients to make the buttercream icing:

3/4 cup shortening
1/3 cup water
1 tsp. vanilla
1 1/2 lb. powdered sugar
Steps:
1. Prepare the cake according to the box directions, allow to cool. Level the cake and place in the freezer for a couple hours.
2. Create a template by enlarging an image of a jersey to the approximate size of the cake. Cut out image so paper can be laid on top of cake.
3. Place cut template on top of cake from freezer. Cake should be firm, but not completely solid. Cut along edges of template so cake is shape of jersey.
4. Ice cake the main jersey color.
5. With icing, write the number (age, in this case) and name (first here), like a jersey. Add the edges of sleeves with accent colors.
6. Add decorative edging around the bottom of cake to create a finished look.

Contest Photo Tips and Guidelines:
- Avoid clutter. Keep the background simple -- your cake is the star!
- Daytime, natural light is best. If your area is bright enough, try taking the photo without the flash.
- Upload a horizontal photo. If you crop the image on your computer, make sure you keep a landscape 4:3 aspect ratio.
- For best results, make your image 1200x900 (or "save for web").
- With a digital camera, you can take as many photos as possible and choose the best one. Have fun!
