Brief Description:

This American Girl cake was made for my daughters birthday. It is a deep chocolate cake with buttercream icing. It is completely milk free due to allergies. The dress is homemade marshmellow fondant and is cut and molded to the cake form.

Dark chocolate cake from scratch
Homemade buttercream icing
Marshmallow fondant

I made the cake in two bundt pans to make it full and long enough. After putting it on a homemade cake/doll stand, I covered the doll body in plastic wrap to keep it clean. I then carved the inside of the cakes to allow the doll's body to stand firmly inside the cake. One hint is to cut the cakes in half and place them around the doll instead of pushing the legs through. This way it keeps the body clean. I used the butter cream to "glue" the two halves together then iced the entire cake. I then used the MM fondant to make the dress. Hint, cut the bodice like you would an actual pattern and mold to dolls body. Embellish as you want.

Contest Photo Tips and Guidelines:
  • Avoid clutter. Keep the background simple -- your cake is the star!
  • Daytime, natural light is best. If your area is bright enough, try taking the photo without the flash.
  • Upload a horizontal photo. If you crop the image on your computer, make sure you keep a landscape 4:3 aspect ratio.
  • For best results, make your image 1200x900 (or "save for web").
  • With a digital camera, you can take as many photos as possible and choose the best one. Have fun!
