Ventriloquist Dummy

Contest Photo by: wsdawes

Description

The costume looks like a ventriloquist carrying his talking dummy. When most people first look at the costume, they think that our son is dressed as a ventriloquist- until they realize that the dummy's head is actually my son!

Materials

suit with button-up blazer, cross shaped support wooden support poles a little longer than the length from the top of the child's head to his or her waist, dress shoes, belt or strap for strapping the upper body of the ventriloquist to the child, polyfill, baby doll with head removed, eyeliner or black face paint pencil, skull with hole in bottom, gentlemanly face mask, pillow

Instructions

  • Attach the pillow to the cross-shaped support so that the pillow forms shoulders for inside the suit coat. Stuff the arms of the suit jacket with polyfill. Put dress shoes and suit pants on child. Place the stuffed suit jacket over the pillow "shoulders" of the support. Lift the wooden support and, with the belt or strap, tie the middle of the support around the child's waist so that the top of the support is just above the child's head and the bottom of the support is just below the waist. Have the child bend at the waist with his or her hands and face outside of the jacket. this puts the ventriloquist in an upright position while allowing the child to stick out his or her head to make the dummy. Button the blazer (or pin it) so that it closes just above the child's head and just below the child's chin. Leave enough room for the child to slip his or her hands out just below the chin. Paint two lines, straight down from each side of the mouth to the bottom of the chin to make the child look like his or her mouth opens like a dummy's. Last, take the headless doll and have the child hold it with his or her chin resting on top of the body, covering where the missing head used to be. For additional spooky effect, have the child hold his or her head still and move his or her wide eyes to the left or right while giving everyone a creepy grin!

Tips for Taking a Great Photo:
    • Avoid clutter. Keep the background simple -- your costume is the star!
    • Daytime, natural light is best. If your area is bright enough, try taking the photo without the flash.
    • Upload a horizontal photo. If you crop the image on your computer, make sure you keep a landscape 4:3 aspect ratio.
    • For best results, make your image 1200x900 (or "save for web").
    • With a digital camera, you can take as many photos as possible and choose the best one. Have fun!
