Description

My son wanted to be a surfer this year for Halloween. Boring! I think we managed to make his costume a little more interesting!

Materials

surfer style swim trunks
2 flesh colored, long sleeved t-shirts
bubble wrap
thread
long embroidery needle
2 yards of 1/2 inch foam
gray primer
white primer
red spray paint
hot glue gun and glue sticks
1 sheet of white craft foam
1 yard blue felt
black glossy paint
blue glossy paint
silver glitter paint
4 large safety pins
Attitude!

Instructions

  • Stitch the two shirts together at the neck. Use the bubble wrap to make muscles at the shoulder, bicep, forearm and wash-board stomach. Slip bubble wrap between the two shirts in the appropriate places. Place it with the smooth backing facing out and the individual bubbles toward the body. Stitch it loosely in place. Quilt around the abdomen layers to form a "six pack" stomach.

  • Spray paint one side of the foam with gray primer running the full length of the sheet of foam. Spray the white primer in a parallel row toward one edge. Blend the two paints as they meet. This will be the back and belly of the shark.

  • Cut 2 pieces of foam to be the left and right side of the shark. Use the scraps to cut the dorsal and pectoral fins. Touch up edges with spray paint. Pin the top (darker gray) seam of shark together. Be sure the dorsal fin is in the seam. Whip stitch down the length of the foam ending at the nose or snout. Then, whip stitch the belly seams together. Spray paint the insides, near the mouth red.

  • Hot glue the pectoral fins onto the sides of the shark. Cut big, triangular teeth from the white foam core and hot glue into mouth of shark. Use the glossy black paint to make the eyes and gills on the shark. Use the glossy blue paint to make water drips on the shark's body.

  • Set the shark body vertically on top of the blue felt. Cut a curvy edge around the sharks body. Be sure the curves extend out where the fins do. Hot glue the bottom cut edge of the shark to the center of the blue felt. Hot glue the fins to the blue felt water as well. Paint silver glitter swirls on the water surface.

  • Cut open and away the extra blue felt inside the shark so the child can walk. Pull on the muscle torso shirt and tuck it into the swim trunks. The shark's mouth is pinned in 4 places to the swimsuit waistband and worn much like a long skirt. We also sewed a large candy bag from felt in the shape of a broken surf board.

Tips for Taking a Great Photo:
    • Avoid clutter. Keep the background simple -- your costume is the star!
    • Daytime, natural light is best. If your area is bright enough, try taking the photo without the flash.
    • Upload a horizontal photo. If you crop the image on your computer, make sure you keep a landscape 4:3 aspect ratio.
    • For best results, make your image 1200x900 (or "save for web").
    • With a digital camera, you can take as many photos as possible and choose the best one. Have fun!
