Sour Apple Laffy Taffy

Description

Since we started the tradition last year my daughter wanted to challenge our creative abilities. She had been searching since last Halloween and decided that she wanted to be a small Sour Apple Laffy Taffy. After studying the small package for hours we grabbed the keys headed to the fabric store and got everything we thought we needed to complete this challenge. It took several hours and cramped hands but the costume was a great success.

Materials

Materials: Sewing machine, white thread, pencils, pen, lots of white paper, pins, craft or fabric glue, felt (green, deep purple, white, hot pink, dark green) and very sharp scissors.

Instructions

  • 1. Wrapper. This is the main part of the costume. The amount of felt for this part will depend on the size of your trick or treater. Since the Laffy Taffy wrapper is fitted tightly around the Laffy Taffy I didn't want to leave it too loose, but didn't want to make it uncomfortable for her. Make sure when you leave an open space for the neck you make sure it is loose enough so it won't rub and that the arm holes aren't to big (this will make the top bunch). If the felt is big enough you may be able to fold this in half and sew upside one side and across the top leaving the neck space open.

  • 2. Lettering. Take the white paper and pencil and free hand draw the lettering to the size it needs to be on the costume. Once completed cut the letter and pin the paper to the color felt that the letter needs to be. Cut around the paper letter, if it isn't perfect once the pins come out you can always go back and perfect the edges. Do this for all the lettering. Once completed the lettering needs to be placed on the shadowing. Glue the letters on the felt that should be the shadow and once it is dry cut around the edges so it looks shadowed. You can free hand cut the Wonka hat.

  • 3. Sour Apple Man. First start by drawing the shape of the apple on the bright green felt with a pen. Cut inside the pen line so that isn't visuable on your costume. Glue the bright green apple to the deep purple felt for a shadow and once dry cut around that for a shadow. Do the same thing for the hat and sunglasses using the appropriate colors. Free hand cut the mouth and dimple. Glue everything together to make the Sour Apple Man.

  • 4. It is better to lay everything out on the wrapper and make sure that the placement is how you want it. Once complete start glue the pieces one by one leaving ALL the pieces on the wrapper to make sure pieces aren't glued in the wrong position. Once the first glue is dry go back over the edges and glue them down again, this will prevent them from pulling and getting stuck on things when trick or treating.

Tips for Taking a Great Photo:
    • Avoid clutter. Keep the background simple -- your costume is the star!
    • Daytime, natural light is best. If your area is bright enough, try taking the photo without the flash.
    • Upload a horizontal photo. If you crop the image on your computer, make sure you keep a landscape 4:3 aspect ratio.
    • For best results, make your image 1200x900 (or "save for web").
    • With a digital camera, you can take as many photos as possible and choose the best one. Have fun!
