Description

My 7 year old saw a costume online (for$54)and asked if I would make him this for Halloween.

Being beach lovers he thought this was the PERFECT costume.

When he was younger he use to fish on the beach at the ocean with his brother and father and caught plenty of SHARKS!

Tables turned this time, a shark caught a little boy!

Materials

Felt...lots of it. Gray, pink, white and black. Craft glue. Hot glue gun & sticks. Thread (white, pink and gray). Cotton batting - by the yard for inside fins. Poly-fill for inside of the sharks head and little boys pants. Size 12 month pants, little kid shoes, 24 " foam piping & elastic.

Instructions

  • Cut torpedo shape out of gray felt (doubled) the length of the child plus 12 ". Cut egg shape from pink felt to fit within top 2/3 of the sharks head (allowing approximately 8 - 10 inches for the point of the Sharks nose). Sew this into place with a basting stitch. Trace white felt along outer curb of pink mouth then cut out teeth (tops and bottoms separate) from doubled white felt, glue layers together. Glue top teeth into place layering on top of the pink felt with craft glue. Cut 4 equal pieces of gray felt & 2 equal pieces of cotton batting in a fin shape, Sew (outer edges) two pieces together with batting (outer edges), then turn right side out (repeat) these are the side fins. Cut 2 equal pieces of gray felt and 1 of cotton batting in a larger fin shape for the dorsal fin sew (outer edges)together and turn right side out.
Cut slit into back side of felt, (at approx. start of shoulder on child) long enough to insert bottom edge of dorsal fin, sew dorsal fin into place. Sew side fins into place. Trace lower part of sharks mouth to create layer of pink and two of gray. Sew outer edges together and turn right side out. Stuff with cotton batting, sew into place.
Sew lower teeth into place with basting stitch. Cut two rounded diamond shapes from black felt for eyes, use hot glue gun to secure them into place. Cut out area for child to be able to see, we used the upside down "V" between the top teeth and a rectangular shape just below to ensure he could see enough.

  • Cut top 1/4 of size 12 month jeans off at a slight angle. Straight stitch jeans to close top. Use 1" foam piping (covered lower portion with white felt to make it look like socks)insert piping into shoes, secure piping into place with a few stitches through the shoe and piping. Cut opposite end of piping at an angle. Hand sew pants into place inside the sharks mouth using heavy thread or string. Insert angled end of piping sew from underneath side of jeans through the piping to secure "legs and shoes" into place. Stuff poly-fill up into top of pants to make it look more real.

  • This outfit was heavier than planned. Rather than just putting poly-fill in the head of the shark and having it fall all over due to the weight, we used 1/2 of a soccer ball to create a "cap" to fit on my son's head, to this we glued on a "cone head" shape filled with polyfill. Elastic was used for a strap to keep the cone head shaped cap on his head.

  • All of this plus 1000% of Gramma's LOVE and TLC went into making this!

Tips for Taking a Great Photo:
    • Avoid clutter. Keep the background simple -- your costume is the star!
    • Daytime, natural light is best. If your area is bright enough, try taking the photo without the flash.
    • Upload a horizontal photo. If you crop the image on your computer, make sure you keep a landscape 4:3 aspect ratio.
    • For best results, make your image 1200x900 (or "save for web").
    • With a digital camera, you can take as many photos as possible and choose the best one. Have fun!
