Robot Costume

Contest Photo by: jvgilbert

Description

This costume proved to be very handy trick-or-treating because it lit up the street...literally! It all started with a cardboard box which I cut and duct taped to fit my 3 year old son Joshua. I then spray painted it metallic and added dryer-duct arms and legs. On the front of the robot there are 5 paper gauges, the central largest is mounted on a cd. Above is a round color-changing battery-powered light. I made a rocket pack from 4 cardboard tubes on his back (complete with tissue-paper fire coming out of the bottom), 3 more paper gauges, and an orange juice lid for a gas cap. Battery powered LED lights border the front and back of the robot. I then added milk jug lids, empty tape rolls and a slinky. The helmet is a bleach jug with a car window shade cut to cushion his head and shoulders.

Instructions

  • Cut a cardboard box to fit your child and duct tape the edges to look like a border. Next cut the bleach jug to fit your child's head. Spray paint the box, bleach jug, the empty cardboard tape roll and the cardboard tubes with the metallic spray paint.

  • Cut the dryer venting to fit your child's arms and legs (up to the thigh). The venting will stretch slightly, but leave enough so your child can move freely in it. Duct tape the cut ends so there are no sharp edges. Cut a hole in each side of the box for the arms and attach from inside with duct tape. Duct tape venting to sweat pants for legs.

  • Cut sunshade to fit inside milk jug and add chin strap. Use more sunshade for shoulder pads, and tape to inside of box. Use remaining sunshade to cut covers for your child's shoes.

  • Poke holes in box to attach LED lights as border to front and back, large light in center (duct tape from the inside of the hole), duct tape battery pack and wires inside the box. Decorate box with various lids, paper gauges, cardboard tube, and slinky. Glue jet back onto the center of the back and glue the tissue paper inside the holes of the jetpack.

Tips for Taking a Great Photo:
    • Avoid clutter. Keep the background simple -- your costume is the star!
    • Daytime, natural light is best. If your area is bright enough, try taking the photo without the flash.
    • Upload a horizontal photo. If you crop the image on your computer, make sure you keep a landscape 4:3 aspect ratio.
    • For best results, make your image 1200x900 (or "save for web").
    • With a digital camera, you can take as many photos as possible and choose the best one. Have fun!
