Proud As A Peacock

Contest Photo by: RAWHITING

Description

My granddaughters love to dress up while they sing and dance to music. They especially love performing to Phantom of the Opera. While I was out shopping, I noticed some masks that I thought would be fun to bring home to the girls to perform with. My first thoughts were that they would have fun performing to Masquerade, one of the songs from Phantom of the Opera. Of course, the girls had a ball with the masks. One granddaughter, in particular, really enjoyed parading around the room in her mask. She was thrilled with the edition to her dress up wardrobe and commenced strutting around the room while she sang and dance. Thats when the idea came to dress her up for Halloween as a peacock. The costume couldnt have been more fitting as she truly loves to be in the limelight!

Materials

Hot glue gun and glue sticks

Navy blue leotard and tights

Sequins, beads, ribbons and feathers for decoration

Felt for bodice

Tulle

Plastic rake

Fanny pack

Mask

Instructions

  • Decorate leotard with beads, ribbon, sequins or other decorations of your choice. I sewed beads with black ribbon around the neck of the leotard and sequins around the skirt of the leotard. Decorate Mask with feathers. The mask I found already had feathers and I just had to add the peacock feather.

  • Cut felt to create a bodice that will cover the front of the leotard and then be able to wrap around 2 inches to the back of the leotard. Decorate the front of the leotard with ribbon, beads, sequins and feathers. Be creative. Sew hook and eyes on so the bodice so the bodice will securely hook to the back of the leotard and stay in place. You could also use Velcro to keep bodice in place.

  • " Cut off ends of rake (about 1 inch). Remove handle from rake. Cover rake with tulle to provide a surface to glue the rest of the decorations to. Use hot glue to decorate rake with peacock feathers, ribbon, sequins, etc. Again, be creative. I used a fanny pack to hold the tail feathers in place and then secured the belt of the fanny pack around the waist. The fanny pack was then hidden in front with the felt bodice. The fanny pack then held the tail feathers in place and was decorated to match the outfit. I also used two picture hangers and two large hooks secured to the leotard to provide additional anchoring and to keep the tail feathers in place.

Tips for Taking a Great Photo:
    • Avoid clutter. Keep the background simple -- your costume is the star!
    • Daytime, natural light is best. If your area is bright enough, try taking the photo without the flash.
    • Upload a horizontal photo. If you crop the image on your computer, make sure you keep a landscape 4:3 aspect ratio.
    • For best results, make your image 1200x900 (or "save for web").
    • With a digital camera, you can take as many photos as possible and choose the best one. Have fun!
