Description

My daughter Mayah(6)spotted a "cat mummy" in the Halloween section while shopping one day - and said "that's it - I can be the Mummy Cats Mommy"! And this years Halloween costume was decided. Next step, how to make it. Keeping in mind comfort, ease and cost, we went for it. Recycling last years ghost costume, an old pair of leggings and a hooded long sleeve gray shirt found at the thrift store, some hot glue and "ta-da" perfect costume. She got rave reviews from all the kids at the school Halloween parade.

Materials

" Old white sheet
" Old pair of white or grey leggings or sweat pants and a long sleeve hooded white or grey shirt or sweat shirt.
(we found ours at the thrift store)
" Tea bags, Rit dye, or arcrylic paint to "age" the white sheet
" plastic shopping bag or two
" small piece of foam or card board for the ears

Instructions

  • " Prep the Wrap
First dye the sheet in the "old" color of choice. We made it grey to match the mummy cat (if you don't have a "mummy cat" I would suggest wrapping an old stuffed animal of your choice - creating a wide range of Mummy Bear Mommy... Mummy dog Mommy ect...) Once the sheet is dyed and dried, rip it into long strips about 2" - 4" wide. they don't have to be perfect, even or the same length - the more varied the better.

  • " Wrap the Mummy
Have your child put on the tights and hoodie. I started from the leg and tacked one end of a stip to the pant leg starting from the thigh - Then I just tacked and wrapped gluing on to the pants and the wrap. * Make sure you take into consideration the flexibility of the wrap you want your child to be able to walk - if it's loose its ok - it looks like the Muummy "broke Free" I purposely left ends hanging and made it losse so she could put the costume on and off. Do both legs this way.

    -Wrapping the hoodie
I put two triangle shaped cardboard pieces in the hoodied for ears. I hot glued them a bunch so they would stand up and look like ears. I then wapped the shirt with the same glue technique of tacking it to the material and then some to the wrap - I left gaps where you could see the shirt and it was fine. When you get to the hood leave some long piece about 2 ft loose off the face of the hood - this way you can wrap it around your childs head so the hoodie stays up and the face is wrapped as much as your child will allow.

    -add the tail
we just twisted up a few grocery bags and then wrapped and glued the to make the tail and then glued it to the back of the shirt.

    " Shoes
same way tack the strips to the shoes, we used crocks and weaved it in and out so I didn't have to glue to the shoes.

    " Face
A little kitty nose and whiskers with some black lip stick or whatever you have.

Thats It!!!! Easy, "cool", original, comfy, and inexpensive! All the qualities we were looking for.

Tips for Taking a Great Photo:
    • Avoid clutter. Keep the background simple -- your costume is the star!
    • Daytime, natural light is best. If your area is bright enough, try taking the photo without the flash.
    • Upload a horizontal photo. If you crop the image on your computer, make sure you keep a landscape 4:3 aspect ratio.
    • For best results, make your image 1200x900 (or "save for web").
    • With a digital camera, you can take as many photos as possible and choose the best one. Have fun!
