Description
Materials
Varying lengths of by-the-yard velcro.
Fishing line
Apolstery sewing needle
Black and white permanent markers.
A long sleeved black shirt and long pants would be ideal for wearing underneath this costume, but my son used a long sleeved dress shirt.
Instructions
Breastplate. Measure chest width (plus 4) and distance from shoulder to waist (plus 2). Cut out two tank-type pieces of vinyl using these measurements. Sew hooked tape to the white side of one piece up each side and on the top straps (this will be the back breastplate). Sew looped tape to the black side of the other piece up each side and on the top straps (this will be the front breastplate).
Arms. Measure lengths (subtract one) and circumferences (add four) of upper and lower arms. Measure from just above to just below the elbow when bent. Create two rectangles using the arm measurements separated by the elbow measurement. Make a circle between the two rectangles to connect them, in the middle of the original circumference measurement. Cut two of these shapes. Sew hooked tape along the black side on the short end of the rectangle. Sew looped tape along the top and bottom of the white side of the rectangles.
Legs. Measure length (subtract one) and circumference (add four) of upper leg. Measure width of the knee (add two). Create a rectangle with the leg measurement, adding a circle in the middle of the original circumference measurement of the diameter of the knee. Sew hooked tape along the black side on the short end of the rectangle. Sew looped tape along the top and bottom of the white side of the rectangles. Make two of these. Measure length (subtract one) and circumference (add four) of lower leg. Create a rectangle with the leg measurement. Sew hooked tape along the black side on the short end of the rectangle. Sew looped tape along the top and bottom of the white side of the rectangles. Make two of these.
Belt. Measure waist circumference and add five. Cut a strip three inches wide using the waist measurement for length. Measure waist to knee and add two. Cut two rectangles knee-length measurement by nine inches. Taper these rectangles in by one inch on each side. Sew the rectangles, black-to-black with an inch overlap, to the belt, beginning four inches from one end and seven inches from the other. Sew hooked tape along the black side on the short end of the belt. Sew looped tape along the top and bottom of the white side of the longer end of the belt.
Yoke. Measure across the shoulders (add three). Cut a circle with this diameter. Measure width of neck (add three). About two inches from the edge of the larger circle, cut a circle with the smaller diameter. It will be offset from the larger circle. Cut a slit through the two-inch section to access the smaller circle. Sew hook and loop tape on the ends of the cut part of the circle to create an overlapping closure.
Decorations. I looked at many pictures online and in the movie of Captain Rex to come up with the diamond and stripe patterns for the costume. It is really a personal style how to do the detail. I found that less is more.
- Avoid clutter. Keep the background simple -- your costume is the star!
- Daytime, natural light is best. If your area is bright enough, try taking the photo without the flash.
- Upload a horizontal photo. If you crop the image on your computer, make sure you keep a landscape 4:3 aspect ratio.
- For best results, make your image 1200x900 (or "save for web").
- With a digital camera, you can take as many photos as possible and choose the best one. Have fun!
